JNIL Symposium: Learning Labs

This year's Learning Labs will be held on Thursday, August 18th (Day 3 of the JNIL First National Scientific Symposium). Learning Labs are short workshops hosted by local organizations working in the maternal, infant, and young child health and nutrition space. 

At this time, all Learning Labs have reached in-person capacity and registration is now closed. Additional details on each of the Labs can be found below!

Please also note that the Learning Labs are the only programming held on Day 3 of the Symposium.  If you are attending an Afternoon Session only, you do not need to arrive at the Kempinski until 12:45 PM.

Overview of the Learning Lab: This session will train participants on how to develop effective data collection tools, select appropriate sampling approaches, collect data, ensure data quality, and perform basic data analysis. Specific programs will be covered such as application of Open Data Kit (ODK) for data collection and JASP for basic data analysis. The session will include group exercises and interaction discussions on challenges, solutions, and evolutions within the field of research.

Objectives: Participants will substantiate their understanding in developing effective data collection tools, selecting appropriate sampling approaches, collect data, ensure data quality and perform basic data analysis. Participants will substantiate their understanding in using ODK for data collection and JASP for basic data analysis.

Expected Outcomes: Participants will be able to demonstrate their knowledge on different aspects of data collection and use ODK and JASP in data collection and analysis. Participants will also discuss challenges and collaborate to find solutions within the research community. 

Target audience: Participants will include practitioners and professionals working within the nutrition research and program field in Jordan. We aim to reach participants who are familiar with data collection and analysis but also recognize and encounter challenges while working with data.

Participant skill level: This Learning Lab is targeted for intermediate, working professionals

Overview of the Learning Lab: This session will focus on effective behavior change model applied over 45 years to influence social norms, moral and positive attitudes of local community members, especially women and direct them towards adopting change. It will engage the targeted audience in an interactive learning setting to optimize knowledge sharing while promoting JOHUD participatory approaches to contribute to enabling learners of undertaking behavioral change beneficiaries centered campaigns on maternal, infant, and young child nutrition. Learners will be exposed to the knowhow of designing, planning and implementing behavior change campaigns on core and prevalent women health issues that are observed through JOHUD’s regional councils and different community committees spread across the Kingdom.

Objectives: Participants will be able to understand how an effective and tested behavior change model could drive envisaged change within local communities. By the end of the learning lab, participants will have knowledge on applicable and practical behavior change model and tools that would achieve the desired change in Jordan. By working in groups, participants will be able to practice the skills of designing and planning behavior change campaigns with focus on prevalent core 

Expected Outcomes: Increase participants understating of applicable behavior change model/s customized to drive envisaged change in any specific domain within local communities. Increase participants’ knowledge of best practices in designing and implementing behavior change campaign/s using most appropriate and practical tools. 

Target audience: Participants will include government and non-government stakeholders, local, regional and international scholars, academics researchers and students involved and/or interested in designing and implementing behavioral change campaigns within Jordan particularly within the space of MIYCN. 

Participant skill level: This Learning lab is targeted for basic to advanced-level professionals

Overview of the Learning Lab: This session will showcase the development process of the first ever lactation counselor certification program in the country. The session will illustrate aspects like private-public partnerships, localization and the capacity development agendas aiming at galvanizing a change process towards improving breastfeeding practices in Jordan.

The goal of the Lactation Counselors Certification Program is  to equip health professionals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding and lactation management for women in Jordan. A new cadre of certified lactation counsellors is envisioned to be established in the country. During the session, CHN will discuss the adaptation/localization of globally accepted tools and standards and the testing activities conducted with vibrant participation from the private and public health sector. CHN will also present the various components of the lactation certification program, including but not limited to the competency framework, the clinical practice and the on the job training package.

Objectives: Review and appreciate the process of adaptation of global tools and standards to meet the needs in Jordan, understand how to successfully build a private public partnership, and identify strategies that help build local excellence.

Expected Outcomes: Participants will learn about the new learning program accessible for growing and learning of health care professionals, network of public private partners to support quality capacity development and professional career path for new and existing health care practitioners.

Target audience: Healthcare professionals, health practitioners, health managers,  agencies and organizations working with women and their children

Participant skill level: Mid-advanced level professionals with experience in health nutrition, counselling, and breastfeeding counselling programs

Duration: 2.5  hours

Overview of the Learning Lab: This session will train participant on the design, methodology, protocols, data collection, data analysis and software used in the process of conducting STEPs survey for non-communicable diseases and its risk factors.

Objectives: Participants will have a better understanding of the study design, methodology, sample frame, challenges, software, how to extract data for the STEPs survey and the utilization of the survey for policy-relevant findings and discussions.

Expected Outcomes: Participants will learn how to draw a representative sample and sample-weight data, collect the data and team composition, and analyze the results using different software.

Target audience: All participants who are interested in learning more about the STEPs survey and data collection related to health data.

Participant skill level: This Learning lab is targeted for participants with basic knowledge of health-related data.

Duration: 2.5 hours
