Introducing the 2023 Jordan Nutrition Innovation Lab Fellows

The USAID-supported Jordan Nutrition Innovation Lab (JNIL) is pleased to announce that four fellows have been selected as recipients of the JNIL 2023 Fellowships Program: Dr. Iman Mahmoud, Assistant Professor at the University of Petra, Dr. Rand Akasheh, Assistant Professor at American University of Madaba, Dr. Hiba Al-Fahmawi, Assistant Professor at the University of Jordan, and Dr. Khetam Al-Awamreh, Assistant Professor at Al Al-Bayt University.

The JNIL Fellowships Program aims to enhance and support policy-relevant research on maternal and child nutrition and health in Jordan. These four selected fellows submitted proposals through a competitive, independently reviewed fellowship application process and were the top four contenders from a total of 28 Jordanian applicants. Over the next 9 months, they will conduct rigorously designed studies and complete publication-ready research. JNIL will continue its Fellowships Program, with an annual request for applications, to achieve its objectives of supporting in-country capacity building and evidence generation for nutrition. imanDr. Iman Mahmoud’s research is titled “Association Between Breastfeeding Patterns During the First Six Months and Postpartum Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Salivary Oxidative Biomarkers Among Jordanian Women.” In this study, Dr. Mahmoud aims to explore the effects breastfeeding on the Jordanian women maternal mental health and well-being using both subjective and objective tools. randDr. Rand Akasheh’s research is titled “The Relationship Between Maternal Stress, Sleep, and Feeding Practices with Picky Eating and Nutritional Status in a Sample of Preschoolers in Jordan: An Exploratory Study.” Dr. Rand was inspired to study these interactions while teaching a clinical nutrition for children course and training to become a certified autism specialist. hibaDr. Hiba Al-Fahmawi’s research is titled “The Effect of Zinc Supplementation on Glucose Homeostasis in Gestational Diabetic Women.” In this study, Dr. Hiba Al Fahwami aims to investigate the association between maternal serum zinc levels and GDM and evaluate the effect of zinc supplementation on glucose homeostasis in GDM patients. KhetamDr. Khetam Al-Awamreh’s research is titled “Jordanian Mothers’ Knowledge and Practice About Optimal Infant Complementary Feeding at 3-24 Months.” In this study, Dr. Khetam Al-Awamreh aims to assess Jordanian mothers' knowledge and review practices about optimal infant complementary feeding.
